Check out the New York Public Library’s Staff Picks

Recently New York Public Library launched a new staff picks application that is a great example of a stylish, user-friendly site that allows a library to offer a traditional service in a new way. NYPL is hardly the first library to offer online staff picks, but this site does a great job of highlighting the top books each month and allowing users to narrow their results to better suit their personal preferences. Users can hone in on books with specific themes or those that focus on character or art. There are also separate tabs for adult, young adult, and children’s books. Clicking on a book pulls up a pop-up window with more information about the book, including a short description and which staff member selected it. For this pop-up, users can also post about the book on social media or request the book (or check out the ebook version if available). The entire site is fully responsive and has a streamlined look that makes it very inviting. NYPL staff are committed to update the site with their one hundred top staff picks each month, so it promises to continue to be a great resource. The site is NYPL’s first developed with Node.js and React, and it serves as a good example of what library’s can do with these tools.
