As You Wish? The Princess Bride App
Earlier this month, Gameblend Studio released a Princess Bride-themed iOS app. As a fan of the movie, my attention was immediately captured by the animated versions of my favorite characters, so I knew I had to try it out despite its $3.99 price tag.
The app currently contains four minigames based around iconic scenes from the movie. Players must achieve specific goals in each game to unlock the next. For example, the first game is based on the shrieking eels scene in the movie and requires players to earn a star by defeating 100 eels before they can unlock the second game, in which players are Westley climbing the Cliffs of Insanity. The third game brings to life the infamous sword fight between Westley and Inigo Montoya and the fourth, and final, game pits players against Fezzik in a wrestling match. In total there are five stars associated with each game and players earn them by achieving various milestones in the games.
Players also start each of the four games with five Miracle Max pills to bring them back to life when they fail. Players who use up all five of these pills have the option to purchase more, but you can instead restart each game if you would prefer not to pay for additional lives.
In addition to the animated versions of each of the characters that are found in the games, the app has movie content integrated throughout, including pictures and famous sound clips and quotes. The app also includes a leaderboard for top scores and can be integrated with the iOS Game Center if you want to compete against friends.
Personally, I found this app somewhat cute but a bit disappointing. The games will all be reminiscent of games you have seen before, simply with a Princess Bride theme. The games may keep players entertained, at least for a while, and the app promises that there will be free updates coming soon, but some reviewers have found it to be overpriced and I must agree. Though I can’t make any promises, the artwork seems to suggest that the next two games will include Westley’s confrontation with Vizzini and the Fire Swamp, and one can always hope that other future additions will take players through the rest of the movie. Perhaps the later additions will make the game more of a standout.
