Draw With Text Using TypeDrawing
Last week, I wrote about Path on for the YALSA Blog. Another similar option focused on drawing with text is the TypeDrawing app. This new app, which has both iPhone and iPad versions, is even more focused on text. Though you can include an image as a background, TypeDrawing makes it easy to create a picture entirely with text.
To get started on a new project, you set what you want your text to be. You can opt to have the phrase appear only a single time, but the default setting is a repeating line of whatever text you have input. When you first open the app, 4 strings of characters are included as examples, but you can add pretty much anything you can think of as an alternative. Once you have selected the text you plan to draw with, you can then set the color, font (from a list of dozens), size, spacing and rotation as well as whether you would like the text to appear in straight lines or follow the path you draw on the screen. You can also set other aspects of the text, such as opacity and capitalization and add any symbol from a list of over 100. Once all of these elements are set, you simply draw on the screen and your text follows the path that you set for it. The app includes an undo and redo button making it easy to modify drawings. Once you are happy with your design, you can save it to the app or to your device. You can also share it via Twitter, Facebook or email. Images can be exported as PNG files of varying resolutions or as PDFs. There is also a simple option to remove the background of the image so that you can add it to other projects, which makes this a nice tool to use with other different graphic design applications. Artists and graphic designers will enjoy the way that this app allows you to manipulate text. These same effects can be achieved using other tools, but TypeDrawing makes the process much easier and allows you to do it from a mobile device. The iPhone version of the app is available for $1.99 and the iPad version is available for $2.99.
