Epic! – An Ebook App for Kids Books
Last fall Oyster was hailed as the “Netflix for books” and now a new app aims to serve the same purpose specifically for children’s books. The new Epic! app offers access to over 2,000 children’s books via their iOS app for a subscription price of $9.99 a month.
Much like Oyster, Epic! offers access to a wide range of books across genres, but unlike Oyster, it concentrates on books for children ages 2 to 12. Users can read as many books as they would like at any given time and can set individual books to be read offline as well. The books run the gamut from picture books to graphic novels to chapter books and include many popular titles as well as older classics. In addition to the option to read the included books, the app also rewards readers with badges for their use of the app and keeps a reading log of all of the app activity. The app also offers customization of both the look and feel of the app itself and of the book recommendations.
Epic! has a good selection of books and displays them well. I also found it very useable and I think that it is something that even young children will be able to use with or without parental help. The app is not connected directly to social networks, unlike some reading apps, which will probably appeal to parents who want to keep their children’s information private. While it would be nice if the reading log made it easy to add books that were read outside of the app, it is nice that it keeps track of what users read since at least some schools require children to submit reading logs. Epic! can’t compete with the number of options that most public libraries will offer for children, but for users who want a way to download new books on the go, it is an interesting option, though the subscription price may be a bit high depending on the number of books read per month. Epic! offers a one month free trial for those interested in giving it a try, so check it out for yourself to see if it meets your needs or watch the video below to learn more about it.
