Motivate Yourself with

Chains LogoWhether you are looking to track your progress with a New Year’s Resolution or merely motivating yourself to keep up with a new goal, it is helpful to have a way to track your progress online and compare your own activities with others with similar interests. A host of apps and tools have sprung up to support these sorts of activities and one such option is This tool, which offers both a browser-based service and an iOS app, tracks your activities and encourages you to create “chains,” which are repeated instances of the desired behavior.

To create an account, you must log in either using your Facebook account or with your email address. From there you will be presented with a chain that can be renamed to reflect your goal. A goal can really be anything that is tracked over time from days without smoking to days on which you go for a run. If the activity isn’t daily, there is an option in the chain’s settings to state which days should be skipped. You can also customize the look of your chain either by changing the color or by having the chain represented by one of the icons offered, such as a pile of books, flowers, weights, and so on. Chains can be shared via a specific URL and users can also add their chain to groups with others pursuing similar goals to gain motivation from those who are also trying to change their behaviors in similar ways. Tracking a completed activity is as simple as clicking the dot next to that day in the chain. In addition to showing the chain itself, the overview page shows additional statistics about your longest streak and best percentage of days. In addition to the browser-based interface, also offers an iOS app for $1.99 that uses a similar approach. It can be used offline, without even creating an account, or can be tied to an existing account to make it easier to track your goals on the go.

For those looking to track ongoing behaviors, is an easy-to-use and visually engaging option. The ability to connect with other users doesn’t extend to specifying those in your existing social network, but the ability to share your chain via URL overcomes this limitation a bit. If you are trying to motivate yourself to achieve a longterm goal, it is worth a look
