Make Walking More Fun With The Walk

WalkBannerWith the New Year around the corner, many people are resolving to get fit. But, it can be difficult to motivate to work out, especially on an ongoing basis. There are plenty of apps designed to encourage you along the way to your fitness goal, but one company that has created some very interesting apps for this purpose is Six to Start. Their first foray into this arena was Zombies, Run!, a game designed to make running more fun by using your smartphone to add a zombie story onto your daily run. Evade zombies, complete missions and collect supplies all through audio supplied while you run. The game has spawned a sequel and a special version geared towards those training for 5Ks.

WalkScreenshotTheir latest app is designed for those who would prefer to walk their way to fitness. Called The Walk, it tracks the number of steps you take and the amount of time you spend walking. As you walk more, you unlock audio content, badges and other rewards and slowly a story emerges about an explosion in the United Kingdom and the aftermath of this event. The thriller includes 65 episodes for over 800 minutes of audio content. To successfully complete your mission, you have to walk the equivalent of the length of the United Kingdom, but the game element not only makes this more entertaining, but is also designed to match your own pace. If you walk more, goals will be spaced out further to make the game more challenging, while keeping it accessible to those who want to participate at a slower pace. You can also opt into longer routes, which will help you to unlock additional content, giving the game an appreciated level of customization.

For those who are competitive, the app, which is available for both iOS and Android devices, will definitely encourage you to walk more. You can see how much further you have to go to unlock rewards and other content at any given time, which will also push you to keep going just a little bit further at any given time. The pedometer function works well and can differentiate between walking and other forms of transportation, so you can leave the app on even if you jump on the subway. So far, I have found the game to be a fun addition to my daily walk. If you are looking for a tool to keep you on track to your walking goals, it is worth a try.
